June 13 – 24

DAY ONE: Our adventure begins as we board our deluxe motorcoach and head west!  We’ll travel  through Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and into the “Bluegrass State” of Kentucky today. Our home tonight will be just north of Louisville.

DAY TWO: This morning finds us traveling north into the Indiana. We’ll arrive in Indianapolis – known as the “City of Speed” and make a stop at the famous Indy Motor Speedway (if the track is open, we’ll take a ride around the “brickyard”). Then we’ll continue north – crossing through Illinois & making a brief stop in Chicago. This afternoon we travel through beautiful farmlands as we continue into the “Dairy State” of Wisconsin. Our home tonight will be in Sparta.

DAY THREE: Today we cross the mighty Mississippi into Minnesota, the “Land of 10,000 lakes” and continue west via I-90. The dairy farms will give way to the grasslands of the plains states as we cross into South Dakota. We’ll travel by Sioux Falls and on to Mitchell where we’ll tour the famous “Corn Palace” – a huge building that is flamboyantly Byzantine in architecture. The palace is decorated annually with scenic murals comprised of over 3,000 bushels of colored corn and grass. Our home tonight will be in Chamberlain, South Dakota. Dinner is included  this evening.

DAY FOUR: Our western adventure continues today as we cross the Missouri River and travel across South Dakota. Our tour director will tell us of such local places as Fort Defiance and Fort Kiowa; and the life-style of the Crow, Sioux and Kiowa Indians, This afternoon will be another highlight on our tour, when we stop at the famous “Wall Drug” in Wall, South Dakota and learn of the fascinating history of this sprawling business (and the importance of a cup of water). Then we take a tour of the Dakota Badlands. This fantastic, painted landscape of steep canyons, spires and razor-edged ridges was made a National Monument by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and became a National Park in 1978. Late this afternoon we’ll travel on to Rapid City for a visit to Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Overnight will be in the Rapid City area.

DAY FIVE: This morning we head west on I-90 past Spearfish into the “Cowboy State” of Wyoming. We’ll make a special stop at Devil’s Tower National Monument–a huge volcanic stump rising 867 feet above the ground! We should see pronghorn deer, antelope and our first prairie dog village. This afternoon finds us crossing  the Bighorn Mountain Range and on to Cody, Wyoming. Tonight we have reserved seats for an authentic western rodeo in Cody! See young cowboys & cowgirls compete for cash and prizes in events such as barrel racing, calf roping and bull riding.

DAY SIX: Now–the day we’ve all been waiting for. We’ll depart Cody and travel to Yellowstone–America’s first National Park. Our tour of Yellowstone includes: Old Faithful, Inspiration Point, Artist Point, The Paint Pots and of course lots of wild animal sightings. There are just too many sites to list here. Late this afternoon we’ll travel to historic Jackson Hole, Wyoming for overnight.

DAY SEVEN: This morning we have a chance to do a bit of touring in Jackson Hole, situated in the heart of the Grand Tetons – one of the most scenic and historic towns of the old west, before heading south across the “Gross Venture Range” of the Rockies and skirting the east side of the Bridger – Teton National Forest. At Rock Springs we pick up I-80 east and travel via Rawlins, Laramie and Cheyenne to Denver, Colorado – our home for the next two nights.

DAY EIGHT: This will be another great day on our tour.. This morning we get to “sleep in: Then we’ll travel to historic Colorado Springs to see the impressive U.S. Air Force Academy and the Garden on the Gods. Then get ready for a great adventure…we’ll board the cog railway train for a ride to the top of Pike’s Peak. At 14,110 feet, this is one of the most celebrated mountains in the world! Late this afternoon we’ll travel back to the “Mile-High” city of Denver for a sightseeing tour and overnight.

DAY TEN: This morning finds us in Independence, Missouri for a tour of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum (remember “The Buck Stops Here”)! This afternoon we’ll continue on to the “Gateway City” of St. Louis–our home for tonight. Late this afternoon and evening we’ll enjoy the riverfront area of St. Louis including the Gateway Arch, the Pioneer Museum and the St. Louis Cathedral. Hundreds of thousands of pioneers came through St. Louis on their way west, so this will make us really appreciate the sacrifices of the true pioneers of our country.

Day Eleven: This morning we’ll depart St. Louis and travel south through Illinois and Kentucky to “Music City, USA”–Nashville, Tennessee for our final night of the tour. We’ll arrive in Nashville in time to enjoy some touring and a great “farewell dinner” with our friends.
